Only 21% are ‘TRUE Twitter Users’!
(The rest are ‘Twerps’)
According to recent ‘Twitter Trends’ posted by Next Generation Online News, only 21% of the 19 million Twitter users studied are considered “TRUE” and active, based on their Tweet activity and follow/follower counts.
If you ask me, their True Tweep threshold of 10 Tweets, Followers, and Following is quite low. In other words, even more of you may be Twerps in Tweeps’ clothing.

Twitter’s meteoric rise in popularity was fueled by the 6-month celebrity rush to build a Twitter presence (Nov. ’08 – Apr ’09). Notable celebs range from TV/Screen stars Oprah Winfrey & Ashton Kutcher, to pop culture fame like Ryan Seacrest & Britney Spears, or sports icons Shaquille O’Neal and my hero Lance Armstrong, even the ‘Governator’ Arnold Schwarzenegger.
With the Celebs came the Fans, and depending on your perspective, Twitter went up or down from there.
For the casual user, the Celeb boom was grand. By following your favorites, it’s almost like they’re checking in with you every few minutes to let you know what they’re up to. As a result, new user accounts skyrocketed to a peak of 23.5 million in early 2009. (Although, many of those accounts are now relatively inactive.)
A Blessing In Disguise
For the TRUE Tweeters (Tweeps), those who use Twitter as a communication and relationship building platform, this avalanche of casual (Twerp) users put us on the wrong side of an ’8 out of 10 Dentists agree’ equation.
On the upside, while the onslaught of the casual Twerps can make it difficult for Tweeps to find their audience, such adversity separates the wheat from the chaff. Tweeps who wish to continue using Twitter seriously must learn to leverage 3rd party tools and cut through the morass to mine social gold. Perseverance brings rewards, as many successful marketers demonstrate.
Your challenge, Tweep, is to rise within the 21%.
