In the first segment of this dialogue (Do You Have the ‘Glands’ to Succeed?) we established that it takes time and effort to build a successful business. (Gee, who’da thunk it?) In addition, you had a reading assignment: read SOMETHING! Oh yeah, there was that ‘leverage’ word thrown around.
I also left you hanging with the promise to unveil:
The #1 PROVEN strategy for personal and/or business growth
That drum roll ends just a few paragraphs down this page.
OK, I’ll concede
‘Overnight success’ is possible and does occur, but so does getting hit by lightning on sunny days! The pundits who woo you with stories of their own first month’s income may be telling the truth. (I know three bonafide millionaires who can validate such a claim.) However, what you don’t see, and they’re not telling you, are the trips, falls, and outright failures which they each experienced prior to striking gold. As a business owner YOU have to move your business forward.
How do I ‘move’ when I don’t know which way is forward?
Pick a direction and MOVE. The key here is just getting started. Quoting from last Sunday’s sermon, my Pastor said: “You can’t steer a parked car.” ‘Shoulda, woulda, coulda’ ain’t gonna cut it! Certainly, you need to perform due diligence and identify a profitable market and a product, excuse me, SOLUTION that’s in demand (more on that in a subsequent post). YOU have to slog through the quicksand, beat the odds, and find success on firm ground. Fortunately, YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO IT ALONE!
Those who attempt success by hunkering down and plowing through the trenches with blinders on are either against-the-grain geniuses, the likes of Donald Trump, or are doomed fall into the 95% of businesses which fail.
OK, where’s the beef?
As a full time work at home Dad, I can attest to a host of challenges and distractions which compound the gauntlet of building a business — let alone succeeding at one. Hell, some days, finding my compass is more of a challenge than knowing where to point it. This is where the #1 PROVEN strategy for personal and/or business growth comes in. Find a MENTOR, or two, or more.
Sure, there are probably thousands of books and gurus claiming to hold the secrets to your market. How do you know which oyster holds the pearl which will catapult you on the next phase in your growth? If you don’t know where to start, find someone who has achieved the success that you want and talk with them. A good mentor is invaluable at any stage of success. All successful entrepreneurs worth their salt understand that their success largely occurred on the efforts of many and are happy to ‘give back.’ If you have the drive and determination to succeed, a mentor gladly offer advice, direction, and encouragement.
The right mentor can make the difference between merely making ends meet and unimaginable success. Here’s an example: You want to train for the Tour de France. Sure you can Google training plans. You can even move to the Alps. That’s all fine and dandy, if your business goals are only to ‘train’ for Tour de France. On the other hand, if you want to WIN the race, then when you’re feeling spagetti legs on day three you need Lance Armstrong in your ear telling you how he attacks this stage. He overcame Cancer for pete sake and still dominates his field!

Awesome blog post Robert. Thanks for the Awesome Information, it will no doubt help me as a entrepreneur as well!
Right on, Robert!
There are enough quotes from successful people about this to fill a whole book!
"Action Cures Fear" (David J. Schwartz) and "Good Is Good Enough" (Dan Kennedy) are two of my favorites.
We need to discipline ourselves to just DO SOMETHING!
And a mentor definitely helps. I am a member of several Mastermind Groups, and run several of my own as well. There is no doubt everyone accomplishes more as a result of getting help, input and motivation from others.
Thanks for the reminder!
Hi Robert,
Great article and thanks for sharing! I learned the hard way over last few years that DIY is NOT the way to go, especially in business. Having mentors really short cuts the learning curve and increases your odds of success.
