The Benefits of Overestimating Your Potential
Idealism holds real value. Not just because of the vision of some idealists, but for the optimism which all idealists possess.
By their very definition, idealists romanticize what is possible. Realists, in contrast, cleave to what is possible and maybe a little less, to be on the safe side.
In the end, reality has its way and what will be, will be. Yet, history proves time and again that great works occur when we ‘give reality a hand’? The real power is in asking “What if?”
The Magic of ‘What If?’
More than just the power of positive thinking,…what if we were all idealists? What if we conspire to remain optimistic? What if we collectively overestimate our capabilities…what could happen?
Great leaders are all idealists. They are all optimists. We follow them because they overestimate what we are capable of and inspire us to see the same in ourselves. They ignite a spark within and challenge us to explore our potential and achieve what we are TRULY capable of achieving. This collective vision is often remarkably more than is realistically possible. Just consider man-powered flight (Wright brothers) or Civil Rights (Dr. King).
This clip of Viktor Frankl, speaking on man’s search for meaning, says it all.
If you don’t know Frankl, he was a Holocaust survivor. While in a concentration camp, he observed how some people had a will to live when others didn’t. His book (link below) is not a Holocaust account, it is a study of man and what drives us to do what we do. His observations and the extreme conditions provide an extraordinarily compelling lesson for almost every aspect of our lives: We cannot control the circumstances that happen around us, all we can control is our attitude.
As an entrepreneur (student, teacher, corporate employee, military, or any other breathing human) you must read this book. (http://amzn.com/0671023373)
